The
Nevada Taxicab Authority is a Nevada State government
law enforcement agency that oversees the taxicab
business in Southern Nevada and Clark County. This is
where you can find information about becoming a Las
Vegas cabbie, and rules and regulations for taxi
companies and taxi drivers, and enforcement of taxicab
laws in Southern Nevada and Clark County.
The Las
Vegas taxicab business is heavily regulated and
controlled by the Nevada Taxicab Authority, which
fines drivers for picking up or dropping off in the
wrong places, not running the meter, long-hauling,
parking in the wrong spot, and many other rules that
are Nevada State Law. The Nevada Taxicab Authority has
unmarked patrol cars and marked patrol cars with
Nevada Taxicab Authority officers enforcing the
taxicab laws in Las Vegas.
The
Nevada Taxicab Authority regulates taxi drivers and
cab companies in Las Vegas. Las Vegas cabbies and taxi
companies are regulated by the Nevada Taxicab
Authority.

TIPPING
TAXI DRIVERS IN LAS VEGAS
The
Nevada Taxicab Authority is quick to point out that
customers are not required to tip Las Vegas cabbies,
and that tipping is optional. But they don't tell you
that Las Vegas cabbies are taxed on tips whether they
receive them or not, and money is deducted from their
paychecks to cover the taxes they may or may not have
made. Taking a taxicab is a luxury service and not a
necessity. Tipping is a courtesy and decency thing.
Some people are courteous and decent, and some people
are jerks. A 20% tip means that the customer is
courteous and decent and respectful of other human
beings. More than 20% means that you appreciate the
good service or good personality or good information
or good driving. Some people tip more than 20% or more
because they realize that Las Vegas cabbies have an
extremely dangerous and difficult job and the Las
Vegas cab companies get most of the money. Las Vegas
cabbies are regularly stiffed by rude people, but
taxes are still deducted from paychecks regardless.
For those who non-tippers who want to save some money,
Las Vegas has an inexpensive and efficient public
transit system
that has buses going up and down Las Vegas Boulevard
24 hours a day, and buses going on other major
arterials during most times. Las Vegas cabbies are
thankful that there are still a few courteous classy
visitors who come to Las Vegas who know how to tip.
TAXI
FARES IN LAS VEGAS
The
rates mandated by The
Nevada Taxicab Authority for
Las Vegas taxi cabs are as follows:

are the same for 1 to 5 passengers

FIVE
PASSENGER MAXIMUM:
Nevada
State Law mandates that taxis may not take more than
five passengers, regardless of the size or age of the
passengers. Las Vegas cabbies are ticketed if they are
caught taking more than five passengers.
SEAT
BELTS AND CAR SEATS FOR CHILDREN
Nevada
State Law states that : Any passenger 18 years of age
or older who rides in the front or back seat of any
taxicab on any highway, road or street in this state
SHALL WEAR A SAFETY BELT. Young children need to have
a car-seat that can be buckled in.
NO
OPEN ALCOHOLIC CONTAINERS:
Sorry,
but the law changed a few years ago. Customers used to
be able to bring their open alcoholic beverages along
for the cab ride, but not any more.
WHO
GETS THE LAS VEGAS TAXI FARE MONEY?
Las
Vegas taxi drivers are employees. Over 50% of the
money collected from taxi fares in Las Vegas does not
go to Las Vegas cab drivers, but goes to the cab
company owners. The $1.80 airport tax is added to
fares picked up at McCarran and does not go to drivers
or cab companies.
WHO
OWNS LAS VEGAS TAXIS?
All
the cabbies in Las Vegas are employees of one of the
sixteen Las Vegas taxi companies,
owned by nine parent companies. Fourteen
cab companies, owned by seven parent companies, own
all the taxis that are allowed to pick up on the Las
Vegas strip, in downtown Las Vegas, and at McCarran
International Airport (the busiest taxicab pickup spot
in the world with over 7000 pickups per day). There
are two Las Vegas cab companies that are not allowed
to pick up passengers on the Las Vegas strip, or at
McCarran International Airport, or in downtown Las
Vegas. The Nevada Taxicab Authority, which is
controlled by the Nevada Taxicab Board, is a
government agency which keeps cabbies in Las Vegas
from owning their own cabs.
In
Las Vegas, all taxis are owned by a handful of
companies and all the taxi drivers are employees. Taxi
drivers in Las Vegas do not have to pay for
maintenance of the vehicles they drive. Las Vegas taxi
drivers do not have to pay for liability insurance and
business insurance and medical insurance. Las Vegas
cabbies do not have to buy new vehicles every few
years. Taxi drivers in Las Vegas do not have to pay
for towing.
Las Vegas cab companies have to pay for lawsuits and
legal fees, and they are common targets for lawyers
and swindlers. Las Vegas taxi companies have to
withhold money for workmen's compensation, employment
insurance, welfare, and social security taxes for
every employee, and they have to match the amount of
what is taken out of employee pay.
MEDICAL
INSURANCE FOR LAS VEGAS TAXICAB DRIVERS
Many
Las Vegas drivers keep their jobs only for the medical
insurance, which can be very valuable in the United
States, especially if a person has any medical
problems. Las Vegas cabbies have to work for six
months to one year before receiving any medical
insurance, and they have to work 60 to 72 hours per
week or more during their first year of employment.
Almost all Las Vegas cabbies have to work 60 hours per
week to keep their medical benefits. If a cabbie in
Las Vegas quits or is terminated by a cab company,
they have to start over as a brand new employee and
wait for at least six months for medical insurance,
even if they belong to a union. Having medical
insurance is crucial in the State of Nevada, which
does not have a high-risk pool for individuals who try
to get medical insurance with a bad medical history or
have health problems, which means that health
insurance can just deny people who need health
insurance the most.
ARE
LAS VEGAS CAB COMPANIES UNIONIZED?
Ten
out of the 16 Las Vegas taxicab companies are union,
represented by two different local unions, United
Steelworkers (USW) Local 711A and the Industrial
Technical Professional Employees Union (ITPE) Local
4873.
WHY
DO SOME LAS VEGAS CABBIES LONG HAUL TOURISTS?
Some
Las Vegas cab companies pressure drivers to book high
amounts in order to drive decent cars and work the
best shifts. Some cab companies push Las Vegas cabbies
to book as much as crooked drivers, resulting in
drivers ripping off customers by long hauling them,
driving reckless and dangerously fast, and stealing
rides from other cabbies, The Las Vegas taxi drivers
who are crooks get rewarded by some Las Vegas taxicab
companies employing them, because over 50% of the
money collected is going to the companies that own the
taxis, not to the cabbies. Some of the Las Vegas taxi
companies are ethical and good to employees.
